Abigail Spanberger Creates History as Virginia's Initial Woman Governor

Throughout 250 years, Virginia has had 74 governors, each one of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this historic barrier by being elected as the state's inaugural woman leader in the commonwealth's history.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency case officer triumphed with a election strategy that highlighted economic pressures and deliberately opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the person.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in a New Jersey town on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently worked in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She attended the University of Virginia, receiving a diploma in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a educator before embarking on a government work.

“I grew up believing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger told followers at a event in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the Postal Service, she handled involving narcotics, exploiters and money launderers. She executed legal orders, often being the sole female on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and focused on anti-terror efforts, working covertly and abroad.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a federal career, to state involvement because she was right. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in the commonwealth, she participated in a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In that period, she chose to run for Congress, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had secured the seventh district in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my representative repeatedly oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she rapidly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious Democrats. She focused on specific policies: bringing internet access to rural areas, combating drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She quickly established a standing for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was often cited as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt alienated independents, cautioning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in swing areas.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of the New York representative.

State Leadership Bid

In November 2023, she announced she would not seek re-election for a fourth term and would rather seek the state's top office in the next election.

Her platform focused on themes of civic duty, advocacy for education and public works and protection of governing systems. Her CIA background gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a vocation rather than a job.

Successful Campaign

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on social topics, including the claim that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who maintained that individual districts should determine whether transgender students can participate in school athletics, portrayed her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
