Are You Able to Crack This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Forged our Contemporary World
One can find many contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, though, that title should go to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, that converted logs to boards with almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial and artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial true factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part converted its circular movement into up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts in order that they operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every descending motion and advancing on every upward motion. This constituted a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
