Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
