Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this meant the weather could to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
