Cameron Norrie earned the most important victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph represents Norrie's initial win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the latest UK male player in the record books to defeat a global number one. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to appreciate my tennis in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and likely the most in-form athlete in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant run of nine finals in a row and 17 straight premier event successes, which was the finest stretch of performances in the Spanish star's young professional path.

The top seed seemed to be moving confidently to a win early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, Norrie slowly battled back into the match by delivering with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical points. His persistent consistency and dependability slowly took its toll.

Through most of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he struggled badly to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked notably uncomfortable striking his forehand, which has been the best shot in the world for much of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie gave his opponent so few mistakes, keeping up his consistency, fitness and penetration throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and play aggressively.
