The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
