The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
