The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
