The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
