Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
